Real Time Sunset

sunset event documentation still

This was an installation/event created for the atrium space of a building within the University of Brighton, the three storey windows of which overlook the south downs to the west, offering stunning views of the sunset each evening. The piece aimed to draw attention to the 8 minutes and 20 second delay (approx) observed when viewing the sun (The delay caused by the vast distance between the Sun and the Earth). As every sunset is seen from earth 8 minutes and 20 seconds after the event has actually occurred, the public display screens in the atrium space were used to show an 8 minute/20 second film of the sun setting without the delay (i.e. 8 minutes and 20 seconds ahead of the sun set visible through the atrium windows). This footage was combined with scrolling text (as normally employed on the display screens to deliver campus related news/information during standard University opening times) which read as follows “Sunset* footage in real time without 8.12 minute delay. (*normally observed approximately 8 minutes and 20 seconds later than the event occurs due to 92,955,807.3 mile journey that light needs to travel to your eyes)”.
